Irish shoppers’ last minute items revealed
Friday, 23rd December 2016: With only two more sleeps until Christmas Day, Tesco has revealed the last minute purchases made by Irish shoppers stocking up for the festive season. Historically, last minute items were once dominated by phone credit, batteries and sellotape purchases; data from 2015 has revealed that shoppers appear to be concentrating on fresh daily produce and family favourites at the final hurdle of preparation for the festivities.
The top ten items sold in Tesco Ireland stores nationwide on Christmas Eve in 2015 included:
- Fresh Milk
- Fresh Cream
- White Bread
- Cola soft drinks (1 and 2 litre bottles)
- Fruit flavour soft drinks (1 and 2 litre bottles)
- Crisps in a tube
- Lemons and Limes
- Big bag crisps and snacks
- Brussels Sprouts
Bacon makes its debut on the list this year having not featured at all in 2014. The appearance of Brussels sprouts in the number ten spot suggests a possible Christmas dinner bacon and sprout combination could be at play to help liven up the humble green vegetable. Today, Friday 23rd, is anticipated to be the busiest shopping day of the year; Tesco Ireland expects to sell over 2 million sprouts across the country reaching a whopping 6.5 million sold in the last week.
Geoff Byrne, Chief Operations Officer, Tesco Ireland, “As a nation, Christmas dinner is one of the most treasured meals of the year, and while this is usually a family filled occasion, it’s not without its stresses or last minute panics. At Tesco Ireland, we’re all about making life easier for the hosts in our lives – from last minute buys to show stopper desserts which will wow any dinner guest, we’ve got them covered”.
To help reduce food waste at home, why not try using the leftover sprouts to make bubble & squeak. Mix with left over potato, shape into mini patties and fry. Add a poached egg or two for a tasty brunch dish.
Select Tesco stores will remain open until 1am tonight (Friday 23rd), with the majority of stores* opening at 6am on Christmas Eve.
