Tesco and Lions Club collect over €200,000 worth of food donations for families in need this Christmas during two-day appeal

Tuesday, December 9, 2014: Over €200,000 worth of food donations were collected by Lions Club and Tesco volunteers during a nationwide two-day Christmas Food Appeal, with Tesco topping-up the final total by 30%, it has been announced.

Taking place in all 148 Tesco stores on 5th and 6th December, the equivalent of over 95,000 meals were collected and will be distributed as festive food hampers to support families and communities across Ireland over Christmas.

During the two day appeal, customers could choose to donate a non-perishable food item in the branded food collection trolley in their local Tesco store. Joe Smith, Lions Club Food Appeal Coordinator described the public response as most generous in extremely difficult times. “We are thrilled that the two day appeal proved to be such an outstanding success. Every food item will go to those who truly need it this Christmas and I would like to thank the thousands of Lions and Tesco volunteers for their efforts.”

Christine Heffernan Corporate Affairs Director Tesco Ireland said: “We have been overwhelmed by the generosity and goodwill shown by our customers, not to mention the huge efforts made by all Lions Club and Tesco volunteers.  Having exceeded what we raised last year and with our 30% top-up to the total, it is fantastic knowing that even more families will benefit from the appeal this Christmas.”

The Christmas Food Appeal is just one of a number of programmes run by Tesco to support local communities and good causes. Tesco colleagues have raised over €13million for its charity of the year partners since 2001 and the retailer will donate €1million annually to local good causes in Ireland through its Tesco Community Fund Initiative. Lions Club International has 115 clubs spread throughout the country, that each coordinates a wide range of projects and supports local people in their communities.
