When nature calls – 61% admit to using mobile phone in the bathroom

Consumers stand to save over €200 by switching mobile phone provider

Tesco Mobile lifts the lid on mobile phone habits with a survey of 1,000 Irish adults uncovering that 61% admitted to using their mobile phone to call, text, email, use an app or the internet in the bathroom and 4 in 10 admitting to checking their partner’s phone. 

88% of the mobile phone users surveyed admitted to using their phone in at least one place deemed socially inappropriate such as the cinema, dinner table or bathroom. . This trend decreased with age with 95% of young adults admitting to using their phone in the above locations compared to 88% of middle age and 79% of mature adults.

Highlighting people’s attachment to smartphones, 56% admitted to always or often checking their smartphone the moment they woke up and 59% before they go to sleep.

Of those who are or have been in a relationship, 4 in 10 admitted to checking their partner’s mobile phone without their knowledge. While only 29% of males have checked their partner’s phone, as many as 45% of females admitted to doing it.

The survey results have been released as part of the current Tesco Mobile Switch campaign highlighting potential savings for smartphone users that switch service provider for pre or post pay plans. Some of the potential savings highlighted in the Tesco Mobile Switch campaign include a saving of €216 over the course of a 24 month contract on the €20 or €30 bill pay Tesco Mobile plans;

  • Tesco Mobile €20 post pay plan includes 300 minutes, 300 texts, 500MB data and 3G on a 24 month contract. A similar Meteor €29 post pay plan includes 300 minutes, 300 texts, 500MB data and 3G on a 24 month contract.
  • Tesco Mobile €30 post pay plan includes 500 minutes, 500 texts, 15GB data and 3G on a 24 month contract.  A similar Meteor €39 post pay plan includes 400 minutes, 400 texts, 1GB data, 3G & 4G on a 24 month contract.

Tesco Mobile is Ireland’s largest virtual network operator (MVNO) with over 300,000 customers. Tesco Mobile customers can benefit from additional savings by registering their Clubcard to their Tesco Mobile account and then earning points when Pay Monthly bills are paid or Pay As You Go phones are topped up.
